Os antibióticos são, possivelmente, uma das mais bem-sucedidas formas de tratamento da história da medicina, porém, o seu uso excessivo tem-se revelado uma ameaça global para a saúde pública e ambiental. Se por um lado a descoberta destes compostos é considerada uma das maiores descobertas científicas do século passado e o seu uso resultou na redução significativa das taxas de mortalidade, por outro, atualmente, o impacte destes fármacos no ambiente é uma preocupação emergente, principalmente devido à ineficácia de estações de tratamento de água na sua eliminação e ao aparecimento de espécies multirresistentes.&lt;br /&gt;

 &amp;lt;p class='mainText'&amp;gt;Segundo a definição clássica, os antibióticos são todos os metabolitos microbianos naturais&lt;br /&gt;

  &amp;lt;p class='mainText'&amp;gt;Para entender as consequências que a contaminação por antibióticos pode provocar no ambiente&lt;br /&gt;
é essencial estudar os eventuais efeitos a curto e longo prazo desta contaminação na&lt;br /&gt;
conservação, biodiversidade e funcionalidade dos ecossistemas aquáticos, atendendo a que&lt;br /&gt;
estes últimos representam, maioritariamente, o seu destino final (FIGURA 1). Para isso é necessário&lt;br /&gt;
investir na monitorização e avaliação do impacte ambiental destes compostos e dos seus&lt;br /&gt;

12; degradação dos solos e perda de biodiversidade — ODS 15) que colocam em perigo a saúde&lt;br /&gt;
ambiental e humana, existem vários fenómenos como os problemas associados ao uso&lt;br /&gt;
excessivo de antibióticos (propagação de resistência a antibióticos e perda da eficácia dos&lt;br /&gt;
mesmos, surgimento de bactérias multirresistentes) que não estão contemplados na lista dos&lt;br /&gt;
ODS. Estudar o efeito individual ou em mistura de antibióticos não é apenas uma questão de&lt;br /&gt;
saúde pública e ambiental, mas também é fundamental para o progresso do desenvolvimento&lt;br /&gt;
global, e para o sucesso das várias metas propostas na Agenda 2030.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
